Georgian Mourning Urn Pendant
An intriguing and rare mourning pendant made during the Georgian era to commemorate the death of a loved one. This pendant is double-sided and features two miniatures behind crystal panels. One side highlights an urn with the phrase “In Death Lamented As In Life Beloved”, meaning “mourned in death as loved in life.” Sections of the urn contain hair. The reverse side of this pendant includes personal details of the deceased. The initials ‘CM’ are elaborately designed under the day of passing – “OB: 20. Mar: 1778.” The rim enclosing the panels is made in 9k gold, while the bail acid tests at a slightly higher karat. This is a spectacular piece of mourning jewelry and well-preserved, despite being over two centuries old.
